Greenhead season, briefly
Greenhead flies (Tabanus nigrovittatus) are salt marsh horse flies found all along the Atlantic coast, from the mid-Atlantic up through New England. They breed in the marsh grass behind the beach, which is why the worst beaches for them are often the prettiest ones.
- Peak season: the last two weeks of July into early August, with activity from late June through September.
- Only females bite — they need blood to lay eggs, and they leave the marsh to find it.
- They bite in daylight, most heavily from mid-morning to dusk, and a light onshore breeze does not stop them.
Bug spray helps. Long sleeves help. Nothing works completely, which is the entire reason this shirt exists.
